Year End Awards Banquet 2013

Once again we were fortunate to have Owen and Dominique von Richter offer to host our party at their lovely home in Port Credit. Presentations and party chores were ably handled by President Ron Armstrong and Social Director Carole Binsky.

The highlight of our June party each year is the presentation of our 3 traditional trophies, plus a
4th award just added this year.

Pluntke-Lutman Award for Competitive Excellence

Again this year there was no doubt about the male and female winners of this award as between them, they broke all 5 of our Canadian records(CR’s) and 15 of our 24 Ontario records(OR’s).

Cindy Bertelink
Cindy took 3 short course CR’s at London Provincials and Nepean Nationals including 200 free, 400 free and 400 IM. In total Cindy won 5 National and 5 Provincial Championships. She also added 3 other OR’s in 100 free, 100 fly and 200 IM. In fact, all her free times and 100 fly were faster than her own record times in her two previous age groups up to 10 years ago! Overall Cindy set 8 club records (ER’s) this year so far with US Nationals still to come next month.
Al Statkevicius
“Big Al” has 2 CR’s to his credit so far this year including 200 free scm at Nationals and 400 free lcm at EOMAC’s Heart Swim on his 400 split. Al also had 7 additional OR’s, namely 50 free scm at Provincials, 100 breast scm at Nationals, 100 and 200 free lcm at the UofT All-OUT meet, plus 100 free, 50 breast and 100 IM sc yards at Alderwood. He won 4 National and 6 Provincial Championships. Al’s times were all faster than the current ER’s in his previous age group. In total Al has set 28 ER’s this year. Two more undeclared times may also be records for Al from the 2013 Lithuanian LC Nationals this June, potentially a CR for 200 free and an OR for 100 free. His 200 free time would rank 8th in FINA’s Top 10 Masters times for 2012 so keep your fingers crossed for another CR for Big Al.

Wavelengths Award for “Most Improved Swimmer”

Maria Cherry
From coach Rob: Maria started off the season with process goals in mind to start her journey for Worlds next season, which are held in Montreal. She was productive in training sessions, always dissecting her technique and improving her kick. She attended meets with a purpose and really showed great character at Nationals in Nepean achieving best times in all 6 of her events and making EOMAC proud. Congratulations on a great season Maria!

Syd Fagan Award

There were two winners this year,

Michelle Tapson
Mirko Petrov

Charlie Lane Award for “Most Dedicated Swimmer”

A new award this year, as chosen by the Board of Directors and presented to members practising or promoting the highest standards of excellence in Masters swimming as shown by their loyalty and devotion to the sport, attendance and effort at workouts, and participation in competition.

Anna Togias
Anna is all about complete dedication…to her swimming, to life generally. Her demanding work ethic means (almost) never missing workouts, and attending all local meets offered. When summer comes she heads to the US for even bigger meets with tougher competition. Anna starts workouts on time and wonders why everybody else does not. She swam the max 7 events plus relays at Nationals this year, our only member to do so. To keep up with Anna you must park your excuses at the pool door before you enter. Her drive and enthusiasm make Anna the perfect choice for the inaugural presentation of this Most Dedicated Swimmer award.
